Edward Thomas in Words and Music Concert Review

A very successful concert was held in Steep church on the weekend of Edward Thomas’s birthday.

Well known local baritone John Lofthouse sang settings of Thomas’s poetry to music by Ivor Gurney and others, including a new work by composer John Hawkins. He was beautifully accompanied by pianist Hiroko Nagatomo-Banks.

The accomplished playing of The Aurora Trio: Emma Halnan (flute), Heather Wrighton (harp) and Jordan Sian (viola) was another delightful part of the programme, as was the beautiful violin playing of Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending by talented local music student Alexandra Peel.

Between the musical items, well known poet Daljit Nagra regaled us with readings of his poetry.

The church was packed for this very enjoyable event. Everyone appreciated the interval drinks and wonderful snacks too.

The concert was organised in conjunction with the HMCollective to whom we are most grateful.
