English Poets and Comic Song Concert at Steep church 4.3.2023

A delightful concert took place on Saturday evening 4th March 2023 at Steep church with funds towards the Friends of Steep Church fundraising.

John Lofthouse, accompanied by Hiroko Nagatomo-Banks

John Lofthouse, baritone, accompanied by Hiroko Nagatomo-Banks gave us accomplished renderings of beautiful poems from A.E. Housmann’s ‘A Shropshire Lad’, set to lyrical music by George Butterworth, two songs of Thomas Hardy poems set by Gerald Finzi and Arthur Sullivan’s stirring ‘Lost Chord’  – a song not often heard nowadays.

The second half of the concert was in lighter vein with comic songs from Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, Flanders and Swann, Tom Lehrer and Richard Stilgoe – all of which were much admired and enjoyed.

Interspersing the pieces by John and Hiroko were performances from the Ukrainian Two Colors Choir. They sang their national songs with spirit, with passion and with an infectious enthusiasm. Our hearts went out to them and they definitely endeared themselves to all present.

The Friends of Steep Church are extremely grateful to all the performers, especially to the Two Colors Choir for giving their services for free in order to raise funds for Steep church.

It was overall a most enjoyable occasion. We look forward to more similar events.
